I LOVE Lemongrass! This is one of the essential oils I always keep a generous supply of on hand. I had always enjoyed Lemongrass for its uplifting scent that is lemony with sweet, green undertones. It wasn’t until I started researching this essential oil in earnest that I came to fully appreciate its impressive list of properties. According to folk medicine, Lemongrass is used as an analgesic, anti-emetic, anti-rheumatic, antipyretic, antispasmodic, asthmolytic, for colds, diuretic, gastrointestinal issues, hypnotic, pneumonia, sedative, sudorific, … and on the list goes.
Since this is Sniffle Season we’ll stick to its anti-wee beastie qualities. During my research I found that Lemongrass Essential Oil is incredibly useful to help guard against the microbes known to cause illness. Without much effort I found 1,000+ screening studies designed to determine the antimicrobial properties of Lemongrass (Cymbopogon schoenanthus) Essential Oil. The results of these screening studies show that Cymbopogon schoenanthus Essential Oil is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial, inhibiting the growth of molds, yeasts, Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. In lay terms, it kills a lot of the bad beasties that make us sick. Because of this, it’s not surprising to find that many of the “natural” cleaners that have started to appear on store shelves over the last few years contain Lemongrass Essential Oil. I’m glad to see the big companies are using essential oils in their products but having been a formulation chemist in that industry I’m always a bit skeptical if they are using enough for the concentration to be useful or if it’s simply a marketing tool. For us DIY folks the answer to that doesn’t really matter. We can just make our own. Here are a few suggestions as to how you can incorporate Lemongrass (Cymbopogon schoenanthus) Essential Oil into your cleaning routine to battle the wee beasties that are trying to make you and your family sick.
Add several drops to your liquid laundry soap and liquid fabric softener for each load
Add 15 -20 drops per 2 cups liquid dish soap
Add 15 -20 drops per 2 cups of your favorite surface cleaner concentrate
Add 10 – 15 drops to your mop water
Lemongrass Essential Oil is awesome in your diffuser. One of my favorite combinations during Sniffle Season is –
3 parts Lemongrass (Cymbopogon schoenanthus) Essential Oil
2 parts Lavender (Lavandula) Essential Oil
1 part Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) Essential Oil
1 part Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) Essential Oil
Add several drops of the above combination to your ultrasonic diffuser or humidifier and enjoy.
